Marrying Dave

save-the-date

My best friend of almost five years proposed to me on Monday, March 11, 2013. I met Dave Whitley in 3D Design and Painting 1 in August 2008. They were at 8:00 and 11:00. Of course I was the one that started the conversation, because I saw that we were gonna have the same schedule for 6 straight hours twice a week, and I just liked making friends in school! He was shy, not very talkative, nerdy, but REALLY talented. He put up with all my jokes and we started helping each other out in school with projects. We walked to the Union in between 3D and Painting to eat lunch. I brought a turkey sandwich and got Starbucks coffee. He got the same thing from Chic-Fil-A every single time – Grilled chicken sandwich with mustard, fries, and sweet tea. In the Spring, we (along with a bunch of new friends) started to plan to take all the same classes together. I knew he was really good and I wanted to learn from him. The summer of 2009, my grandfather died. Dave was there for me while I was going through one of the hardest times of my life. That summer he became my best friend.

It was BIG news that we started dating in November of 2011! (That’s a whole other blog post.) Well I guess that leads us to the proposal. One of our best friends Tim Cook sent me a text on Monday night “Are you with Dave?” This wasn’t out of the ordinary because Tim, Dave and I are always showing each other our work. I said yes (we had just finished eating supper). Tim said “Perfect! Can you go to http://tim-cook.com/newsite? I did some work on my website this weekend and want y’all to look at it.” Again, this is NORMAL. Tim has been redesigning his website for two years now and Dave and I have both been helping him with it. The weekend before I had told him “just get Dave to design it for you and finally finish it!” HA! So I tell Dave we have to go look at Tim’s test site. I ask him to pull it up on his laptop. He types in the address and it rolls over to http://katewhitley.com and this is the screen…

Clever, right? I first thought this was a mean joke from Tim. (Tim’s been teasing me for months on when we were gonna get engaged!) Then Dave reaches for his pocket then gets down on one knee. He asked me to marry him and I’m still a little in shock. Of course I said YES! And I never gave him any pictures or descriptions about a ring. But he picked out the most gorgeous antique 1920s Art Deco ring that I just love. And the thing I love the most about it is that he picked it out and knew what I would like.

The past year and a half has been filled with so much joy. I am thankful every single day for this man. I love him more everyday. I’m so thankful we have been in each other’s lives for SO long now. I can’t imagine my life without him. And I don’t want to! He is so wonderful to me. He brings me incalculable joy.

I can’t wait to marry him. I am looking so forward to all of our friends and family to share in our wedding day. Below are just a few pictures of the hundreds we have together from school and just a few of us dating. Our wedding website is not done yet. But when it is, I will be sure to let you know. (I’m marrying one heck of a web designer. Wedding bloggers are gonna be all over that! HA!) Oh! And yes, those are our two cats in the Save the Date (Eric and Weezie). AND the cutest thing – Weezie Thomas is going to become WEEZIE WHITLEY! oh. my. word. I actually had the idea for the Save-the-Dates almost a year ago. I have not fantasized about my dress or flowers, but don’t think for one second I haven’t given A LOT of thought what our invites would look like! Obviously it’s the most important thing to us.

Home is where my cat is

Two years ago on Wednesday, my dear friend Rob gave me Weezie.

This is the day after I got her.

This was her two days ago begging for some of my ice cream…

Obviously Weez is my child (and may I say the cutest one. Everyone says she takes after her mom!) And wherever I move, my cat is my home. So I have made this for all the folks out there who are just like me.

Yep. I did it. I’m not ashamed either. Dog lovers can hate on me, and I’m okay with it. You can purchase it in seafoam or red for just $15. Hang it over your cat’s food bowl and send me a picture! kate @ littlethingsstudio . com !!!

New Letterpress Business Cards for Surtex

In case you didn’t know, I’m going to Surtex! Here is my new website just for surface design.

I have spent the past four months preparing for this show. And I really wanted to do something special for business cards. My Little Things Studio cards are fine, but nothing is super special about the size, paper, etc. And I really am trying to stand out at Surtex. My roommate (the incredibly talented Kristen Ley) graciously told me she would letterpress me some business cards!!! I thought it would be YEARS before I would be able to have this. I can’t believe she gave me such a special gift – her talent and time.

Kristen bought a 1925 Chandler Price letterpress machine this past summer. It has been awesome to watch her perfect her craft. If you don’t know much about letterpress, then you probably don’t know how expensive it can be, because it is very time consuming. I can’t tell you how proud and thankful I am for this gift from her. She helped me decide on the color, paper, etc. And we figured out how to edge paint the cards (keep reading! details coming!)

This was a very labor-intensive project. And sometimes dangerous…Kristen almost broke her finger on the 2nd night of working the press! She was picking up a piece of paper from inside the press when it was slowly moving and her finger got caught for a second there! It was horrible. I grabbed the keys, ice, and Advil, thinking I was about to take her to the ER. But she decides she’s going to tape up her hand and keep working! Ah! The next morning she went to get an x-ray and it was miraculously not broken! I still can’t believe that happened! It was so scary, because that was her right hand pointer finger – the hand she uses to draw and paint! We are all so thankful it is okay.

Before I go any further, I have to say without Kristen, Dave, and my mom, these cards wouldn’t have gotten finished. Kristen printed them for me. Dave cut them, and my mother did the edge painting.

Card details: Crane Lettra 220 lb. fluorescent white, printed front and back with neon colored edges. And of course they are yellow! There are only 800 in existence. I am so proud and so very thankful.

The plate is locked and loaded and ready to go.

Adding yellow ink!

Willow (Kristen's goldendoodle) will eat just about anything, including yellow ink.

Such a model.

Press is inked and ready to print

Weezie watched the entire time from the washing machine. She wanted to be outside with us so much.

And here is the final result!

My phone number is on there this time!

The back of the card is one of my patterns.

Cards are edge painted in NEON pink, coral, orange, and teal!

Side view of the cards all stacked together!

SO I guess you are wondering how we did the edge painting, right? Well, the letterpress community is very tight lipped about this process. Kristen contacted different letterpress folks and I called friends I knew and we found there is no one set way to do it. And there would be a lot of trial and error. Kristen suggested trying Letraset Markers. Well, I ordered them, but they bled onto the page. I tried draining the ink and just using the little bit left. That worked, but I couldn’t get a solid coating on the edge of the paper. I then just tried Crayola Markers AND THEY WORKED! They didn’t bleed, gave a solid coat and everything! We were shocked! I ended up buying a pack of the Rose-Art Neon Marker Pack and used my favorite four markers from there. NOW I will tell you that these cards do bleed if you spill water on them now. I went back and dipped some of my edge painted samples and they didn’t bleed on the paper. So I am not saying this is the best way to do it. It has to be what works for you. But who in the world is going to get these fab cards near water!?!?!? You’ll want to frame this card it’s so fab!

I’m so very thankful to Kristen. Please click here to see her amazing work. Her Small World series will take you back to a time of innocence and joy that will do your heart good.

Hope you enjoyed reading about this process!

Meet Charis, y’all! (Cutest intern ever!)

I am so happy to introduce you to the newest addition to the Little Things Studio gang. The “Cutest Intern Ever” Charis Boyett has been kicking production up a notch here. I thankfully found her about a month ago. Two of her older sisters are good friends (and great customers) of mine. Charis just came back to the United States. She finished high school in Kenya while her parents were serving as missionaries in Uganda. I am privileged to have her this one year while she’s taking core classes at a community college here in Jackson.

She is such a help to me. I have taught her how to take product shots and edit them in photoshop. And the girl has incredible craft. She pays attention to the tiniest of details, which means I can trust her with anything I throw at her. She really cares about what she’s doing. I have so much fun when she’s at the house, even though I sometimes leave while she’s working (because I know I can trust her to get the job done.) Y’all just don’t understand what a big deal that is. I don’t know what I’m going to do when she goes away to school.

And it’s not just the work that she’s doing, but she’s become a friend to me. She has such a servant’s heart, always thinking of others. I have been so blessed with just getting to know her. I kept telling her I was going to put her up on the blog, but she kept resisting. “I’m awkward,” she kept saying. And I’m not?!?! Weezie got a new yellow collar which is the perfect excuse to start taking pictures. Weezie let her hold her for just a minute, but then wanted down. Sigh. But I did one really cute one of them together. -Kate

Friday Afternoon Kitty Photoshoot

I stay at home on Fridays and work on Little Things Studio and play with cats. Today Weezie was sitting in the window looking fabulous (although a little naked without her collar which she keeps losing!!!!) so I started taking pictures. Then my roommate Kristen’s cat Frodo wanted to pose for me. He is the sweetest cat. Even dog people love Frodo because he is so friendly. Weezie and he are the best of friends. I’m so happy she has him to play with while Kristen and I are at work.

If Little Things Studio doesn’t work out, I might try to take up cat photography.
